The plot introduces a boy by the age of 10 living in a boys orphanage they call the Home. The Home is in a city called Flint. Buds' best friend is a boy named Bugs and they both have been sent off to different foster homes. Bud was sent off to a foster family called the Amoses. Bugs was sent to a foster home among two younger girls.
The Rising Action includes Bud "escaping" from the Amoses. Meeting Lefty Louis on the highway as he is on his way to Flint. It also includes meeting Lefty Louis's family and meeting Herman E. Calloway as well as the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. This section also includes going to eat dinner at a restraunt called the Sweet Pea with Herman E calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the depression after Bud confronted Herman E Calloway of being his father. This section also includes Bud getting a room in "The Grand Calloway Station" which is Herman's house. Bud also receives a a flute and a case from the Thug and other band members.
The Climax is when Herman finds out that buds, mother was his daughter and that she is dead. Bud finds out that Herman is actually his grand father not his father.
The falling action is when Herman is in buds room crying and when bud gets a picture of a mother and sets it on his new bedroom dresser.
The conclusion is when they all decide that Bud will stay with them and live as one of them and play in the band with them. Bud will not be going back to the home and has finally found a family for him.
